Why Consider a Necropsy?

A necropsy (often called an animal autopsy) is a post‑mortem examination used to investigate and discover possible causes of illness or death. Veterinary pathologists explain that necropsies help determine whether infectious disease, inflammatory processes, congenital anomalies, cancer or underlying physiological abnormalities contributed to an animal’s decline. When the cause of a pet’s deterioration or death is unclear, a necropsy can provide answers for families, assist veterinarians in diagnosing undetected conditions and contribute to overall animal health.

Our Pathology Team & Facilities

Texas Veterinary Pathology, our sister company, handles all necropsy services. Dr. Estep and Dr. Jerry perform examinations in our on‑site pathology laboratory in New Berlin, Texas, and at off‑site facilities when needed. Because necropsies require specialized expertise, board‑certified pathologists examine all tissues and, when indicated, submit samples for histopathology and microbiology to identify subtle changes or infections. While the procedure may provide important insights, even highly experienced pathologists cannot guarantee that a definitive cause of death will be determined.

What to Expect & How to Prepare

Ideally, necropsies should be performed as soon as possible after death; pathology experts recommend within 24 hours when feasible, or the body should be refrigerated (not frozen) until the examination. We can accept animals of all sizes. Following the examination, you can choose communal cremation (no ashes returned) or private cremation with ashes returned in an urn; memorial items such as clay paw prints or fur clippings can also be requested.  Our team will discuss all costs and options with you beforehand.
